The Attraction to Activism: Recruitment and Retention
The Attraction to Activism: Recruitment and Retention in Progressive Student Organizations

Syracuse University Honors Thesis

In progressive politics, much attention is placed on the need to recruit and retain members in social movement organizations. This thesis identifies (1) early influences that made individuals more attuned to progressive politics, (2) initial recruitment tactics or other ways that led participants to join a progressive student organization, (3) the characteristics of the group that appealed to them enough to continue their involvement, and (4) the barriers to involvement and weaknesses of the group that could have deterred them and/or others from participating.

The results of 40 interviews with members of three progressive student organizations at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well of four months of participant observation, shed light on the recruitment and retention process of these student organizations.
