The National Union of Students was formed in the mid-eighties. This looks at its formation and the role of factions. It shows some of the problems that come from trying to have a mass-based student union that represents people with very different political views. (A possible solution to this is to decentralize and use proportional representation - to share the power (and money) of the national student union between the radicals, liberals, moderates, and conservatives).
