DC COME OUT AND BE COUNTED!!!

The HIV/AIDS pandemic is the greatest global threat in the world today. Recent UNAIDS statistics puts the global total number of people living with HIV at 33.2 million. 2.5 million people were newly infected and 2.1 million lives were lost in 2007 alone. Sub Saharan Africa is the worst affected region accounting for more than three quarters (76%) of all AIDS related deaths in 2007.

A recent study by the DC HIV/AIDS Administration called HIV in D.C a "modern epidemic", revealing how the disease is reaching into all parts of the city with the heaviest impact on the African American community. More than 80% of infections between 2001 and 2006 were African Americans and African American women account for 90% of HIV cases amongst women. The study estimates that 1 in 20 city residents are HIV positive, showing how AIDS is indeed 'everybody's disease'.

There has never been a time when it has been more crucial for all of us to ACT NOW to stop this deadly pandemic. Africa Action invites you to come to the World AIDS Day rally to send a strong message to our government and policymakers demanding that they take decisive action to end AIDS locally, nationally and globally. This year's World AIDS Day's theme is "Leadership" - we demand that our government take global leadership in intensifying prevention, treatment, care and support efforts. We also call upon ourselves as individuals to take leadership in our communities, schools and workplaces in the fight against AIDS.

At the rally we will call for: 1) all DC students to receive a medically accurate and unbiased comprehensive sexuality education that includes lessons on HIV/AIDS, 2) the immediate implementation of a comprehensive national HIV/AIDS strategy, and 3) at least $50 billion dollars over the next five years to fight global AIDS.

OUR NUMBERS COUNT!!! - BE THERE!!!
