+25677431577An initiative by students at Makerere University, the Student Global AIDS Campaign-Uganda (SGAC-Ug) was formed in June 2004 as a strategy of availing the young people in all schools and institutions with an opportunity to get involved in the fight against AIDS. SGAC-Ug seeks to create a network of students in Uganda in partnership with students abroad, who are committed to fighting AIDS as a global crisis. By forming a global youth movement, we will rise to the challenge of our time, and we will halt this pandemic. Students in higher institutions of learning are strategically positioned to enhance participation of young people in responding to the pandemic. They therefore need to be mobilized, empowered and equipped with appropriate tools and resources for this noble task.
Specific Goals and Objectives
There are two major goals for the “Student Global AIDS Campaign-Uganda” initiative and specific objectives within each of the goals.
Goal #1 To reduce the degree of HIV/AIDS infection among students and young people in Uganda.
To provide information to students and other young people about what HIV/AIDS is, how it is acquired and how it can be prevented.
To provide voluntary HIV/AIDS counseling to students in Universities and other institutions of learning.
To encourage voluntary HIV/AIDS testing among students so that relevant help can be given.
Goal #2 To enhance student involvement in the national fight against HIV/AIDS, the crisis of our generation.
To enhance knowledge among students about the threat of the HIV/AIDS pandemic to national development
To be a channel through which Government and NGOs can reach the people especially the youths in the fight against HIV/AIDS, such as providing educative and material help to patients and their families.
To explore how students feel about the current efforts and approaches being used to fight HIV/AIDS, and how they would want to be involved.
Advocating for increase in Government budget to fight AIDS and ensuring that funds are effectively used to grass root level.
